O primeiro evento promovido pelo UFC ocorreu em Denver, Colorado. A proposta do evento era identificar a arte marcial mais efetiva, em uma luta entre competidores de diferentes tipos de luta, incluindo jiu-jitsu brasileiro, boxe, wrestling, muay thai, judô, karatê, tae kwon do, entre outras. Em eventos subsequentes, passaram-se a adotar técnicas efetivas de mais de um tipo de luta, o que se iniciou com o famoso lutador Marco Ruas, o que ajudou a criar um novo estilo de luta que hoje conhecemos como artes marciais mistas.
